ePUB Reader – How to Open ePUB Files on Your Computer.
What is ePUB, ePUB Readers, and how do I open ePUB files on Windows or on Android phones?
What is ePUB?
The ePUB file format is short for “electronic publication” and makes use of the “.epub” file extension. It was introduced in 2007 as an e-book format and can be opened by portable e-readers, as well as your computer or mobile phone.
ePUB files are notable for the fact that they can contain text, images, contents tables, specific fonts and file information. Additionally, they are reflowable documents, meaning the flow of text is optimised based on the display of the device it is being viewed on and the boundaries of the screen. The format also allows for things like re-sizing of fonts, highlighting of particular passages of text, the addition of notes, page bookmarking, and chapter jumping.
The file format can be opened by popular e-readers like the Nook by Barnes & Noble, as well as on computers and mobile phones with compatible software or apps. However, it is worth noting that the Amazon Kindle cannot read the ePUB format, so any ePUBs must first be converted to a compatible format, such as MOBI.
ePub files are commonly offered on platforms that provide free access to public domain books, like Project Gutenberg. One thing to keep in mind is that many computers do not come with native ePUB software. As a result of this, you will likely need to acquire a third-party application, which will allow you to open and view e-books in this format.
How to Read ePUB Files on Windows Computers.
In order to open and read ePUB files on your computer, you will first need to download compatible software, or use a web browser that supports a compatible browser extension. Fortunately, there are a number of these available.
- Calibre is an e-book reader and word processor, which is open-source and available on a cross-platform basis. It provides support for opening and reading a range of different file formats, including ePUB and MOBI. It can also be used to edit various aspects of e-book files and to convert from ePUB to Kindle formats.
- Assuming you are running a computer with Microsoft Windows, another option is Sumatra PDF, which is a free and open-source e-book reading application. Although it lacks some of the more advanced features associated with Calibre, it does support opening and reading a large number of file formats, including ePUB, MOBI, PDF, FB2 and XPS.
- If you would prefer your web browser to function as an ePUB reader, there are a number of options available. A web browser extension called EPUBReader is available for both Google Chrome, Mozilla and Microsoft Edge. This will allow you to open and read ePUB files directly in your web browser, without needing to download and open them separately.
- Another example of a browser extension that may be useful is EpubPress, which can be used to turn web pages into e-book formats, including the ePUB format. This then allows you to read content offline, using e-readers or e-book apps.
How to Read an ePUB File on Your Android Mobile Phone or iPhone.
If you need to open an ePUB file on your mobile phone, the good news is both Android devices and iPhones come with apps pre-installed which are able to do this.
- In the case of Android, the application in question is Google Play Books.
- For iPhone, the application to use is Apple Books, formerly known as iBooks.
- Both of these applications allow you to add your own e-book files to your library and read them within the app, but they also include built-in stores for purchasing new e-books and audiobooks as well. In the case of Apple Books, you will also need a device with iTunes on it, in order to sync your ePUB files with the app and make them accessible.
- For Android users, Moon+ Reader is another popular option, which allows you to easily import e-books in a variety of formats, including ePUB, MOBI, PDF and HTML. It also includes a number of other options, such as auto-scrolling. Examples of apps with more basic functions include ReadEra, Lithium and Kobo Books.
- Kobo Books is also compatible with iOS and the app, which is owned by Rakuten, offers support for a range of file formats, while also offering its own internal library, which provides access to millions of e-books and audiobooks.
ePUB to Kindle: How to Convert an ePUB File to MOBI or PDF.

Since Adobe sets the standards insofar as PDFs are concerned, it only natural to try the most compatible app for these files, namely Adobe Reader.
Uncluttered GUI for optimal PDF vieweing
The looks are clean and user friendly, so you should have no problems in using this app to its fullest. Zooming and moving through the pages is usually seamless, but there are cases in which it becomes more difficult to swipe from one page to another, mainly inside large documents, containing high quality images.
The commands toolbar is hidden and you have to tap near the top of the screen to bring it into view, which can become somewhat bothersome, especially since it remains visible for just a couple of seconds.
Excellent PDF handling and supplementary functions ready for use
Since it deals solely with PDF documents, Adobe Reader seems one-track minded, but it strives to get passed that by delivering some extra features. The ability to open files stored in your OneDrive account is one of them and there is also the 'acrobat.com' section where you can subscribe to various services.
The tools that are actually built-in this app and can be used without restoring to any external functions are the text search, highlighting and annotation functions, which are accompanied by the text strikeout and underline features.
Nonetheless, at times, Adobe Readerdoesn't manage to load the documents as quickly as it should and with some files stored in the cloud, the page navigation is difficult.

Bottom Line
Plain and simple as its looks are, Adobe Reader doesn't stand out from the rest of the crowd in this department. More so, the menu bar behavior is well below the expectations many have from such a well-known solution. | Function5 Bent on reading Portable Document Format files, this app has very few abilities other than opening PDFs. | Security8 Unless you choose otherwise, Adobe Reader will not send any usage data, nor will it collect personal information from your Windows Phone. Anther good thing about it is that there are no advertisements in sight. |
Battery7 The load on the system resources is average and it all comes down to the location of the document and its size. Loading and browsing large PDFs stored in OneDrive will certainly put a lot more stress on the battery than opening files from the phone or the attached SD card. | Price7 A good deal on the whole, this app offers its main functionality for free, but some of the features that can be found in the 'acrobat.com' section require a paid subscription. | Compatibility7 Targeting the more recent platforms, namely Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 means that those who own older handsets will not be bale to benefit from this app and turn to a different solution. |
